I am one of the attorneys representing Stephen King, the deputy director of the City of Knoxville Engineering Department, who was recently returned to work by order of the hearing officer in Steve’s Civil Service grievance. After a 38-year career with the City Engineering Department, Mr. King was abruptly terminated on Aug. 31 because the city administration decided to abolish his position. Fortunately, the hearing officer ordered him to be returned to work with full back pay.

It can truly be said Christmas came early this year to former Knoxville city engineering director Steve King.Bill Petty, special civil service hearing officer, ruled Tuesday that King must be offered retreat rights with the city engineering department after Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero abolished the deputy engineering director position.
